Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. Hebrews 12:2-3
But without faith it is impossible to please him: Hebrews 11:6
For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins Hebrews 10:26
When God converts the minds of His people He gives them grace to look outside themselves to the proper object of faith: Christ Jesus The Lord. The elect are saved from themselves. They are given repentance to change their mind about their former trust they had in their own deeds. They see the only merit God will accept is that of Christ. They submit to that standard and are quite happy with it. They do not go back to continue in their old false religion, but rather hear and listen to the voice of the Shepherd. They are preserved and as a result they persevere in trusting the only sacrifice, the final sacrifice of the Lamb of God. They look to Him. This is the justified sinner's life: a continual looking to Jesus by faith and resting right there. What joy! What peace! What comfort! What assurance! Thank God for sovereign grace.
